Liz Larson is the founder of The Art of Frosting YouTube channel. Her instructional cake decorating videos have been viewed more than 60 million times by cake enthusiasts around the world since 2012.
Liz is a second generation Commercial Cake Decorator taught by her mom, Judy, who worked in the industry for more than 45 years. Liz began decorating at 19 years old, implementing Judy’s combination of techniques for creating amazing cake designs and methods for building thriving cake businesses. Liz went on to specialize in training companies and apprentices to build their own cake businesses, both storefront and home.
She took a short 12 year break from the Cake Decorating industry to create and build three car dealerships, again gravitating toward teaching as her company’s sales trainer. During this break she continued to create new designs and techniques as she made the occasional birthday or wedding cake for close friends and family.
In 2012, family friend Carl Jacobson of YouTube’s Woodshop.tv asked Liz to create a cake video. After much convincing, they made their first “Barbie Doll Cake” video. Liz decided to teach like she would train any new apprentice, showing each step of the process and guiding viewers to create this design themselves. To their surprise, this 25 minute video training went viral and “The Art of Frosting” was born.
Liz then helped her daughter Leah Larson create ‘Leah’s Crazy Cake Lab’ YouTube channel in 2014 showcasing Leah’s humor and incredible sculpting skills in buttercream. The two often team up appearing in each other’s videos.
As Liz taught commercial decorating techniques to her millions of viewers, she began to receive letters from cake decorators around the world sharing that they were creating storefront and home businesses from the work she was sharing online. The letters came from places she never expected like Bagdad, Mumbai, The Dominican Republic, as well as the U.S., and many more. Her viewers shared that they were changing their lives with new found skill and incomes. She and Leah were so inspired by the amazing work that their viewers were achieving that they wanted to create new ways to assist their viewers in design, techniques, and business. They knew they needed a platform that could give more depth of instruction with longer trainings, recipes, PDF’s, drawings, and instructional manuals.
Now they have teamed up to create The Cake Academy allowing them to take students to higher and higher levels.
